2012 Petit Verdot

2012 Petit Verdot

Traditionally used for blending, Petit Verdot is big, rich and dense. It’s one of the black grape varietals used in Bordeaux, and there’s not a lot of it around outside of Medoc.

Rare and wonderful, as a stand-alone wine Petit Verdot is lush, full and pleasing when given a chance to age properly.

Vintage

The 2012 growing season started with an exceptional fruit set that allowed for tailoring the eventual ripened crops through green harvest. Three previous vintages had offered lower yields. That said, yields from 2012 were back to ‘normal’ and even a bumper crop in some cases. Heralded as a ‘classic’ Napa Valley vintage, the growing season was long. Days were warmer than average and nights were very cool. These temperature fluctuations created even ripeness in the berries with great acidity to assist in aging ability and higher sugars to help create lush, full wines. Harvest was easy going with no surprise rains or temperature spikes. The wines from this vintage will be talked about for many years to come.

Wine Profile

This is a wine for the ages! Quite literally. Deep ruby red in color and opaque almost to the rim, the brightness of the nose takes you by surprise with layers of candied apple, cherry cheesecake, blackberry brown sugar, red pixi-stix candy, gelatin, light cigar box and tea rose. On the palate, many of those flavors deepen and play through, blending with chocolate covered blueberries, pomegranate juice, toasted pie crust, black pepper chai spice and creamy oak. Firm tannins and a nice long finish round out the mouthfeel. Not for the faint of heart, but definitely worth getting to know. 7 barrels produced, inaugural production year.
